Introducing AfterCap easily
This is a guide written so that even those not familiar with computers can read it. For detailed usage, start from Chapter 1. Take a look.
In one line,
it is a program that takes screenshots and, when you explain verbally, turns that into a document.
What kind of program is it?
Think about when you need to explain how to use a program to someone else. Usually, you do it like this:
- Capture the screen one by one,
- paste it into Paint,
- open Word and move the images,
- and type the explanation text one by one.
AfterCap changes this work like this:
- Press the record button and, while operating the screen, explain verbally.
- The program writes down what you say as text (automatic subtitles).
- It organizes the recorded text and screen scenes into a document format by itself.
- After finishing, export it as a manual, presentation material, or YouTube video.
In other words, "what you explained verbally" becomes "a document you can read".
Needed for people like this
| In situations like this | With AfterCap |
|---|---|
| You need to teach a newbie how to use the company program | Record screen operations while explaining verbally → Complete the manual |
| You need to create a user guide to send to customers | Attach screenshots and write explanations in HTML·PDF |
| I want to upload lecture videos to YouTube | Recording + automatic subtitles + chapters all at once |
| I want to turn already written text into a well-formatted document | Import the manuscript and convert it into various formats |
| I want to save e-book or document viewer screens one page at a time | Automatically turn pages and save |
What can be made?
- Manual — Online document (HTML), PDF
- Presentation materials — PowerPoint (PPTX)

1. Getting Started
1-1. I do this kind of work
AfterCap is Turning what is spoken and shown on the screen into a document This is a program. There are two main workbenches inside.
- Video production — A workstation for recording the screen, cutting and editing, and transcribing spoken words into subtitles
- Document creation — A workbench that assembles captures and texts into sections to create a manual
The two workbenches can be used separately, Subtitles → Script(Chapter 4) can also be continued. The moment this program's power is strongest is when you continue — because a video explained with words soon becomes a draft document.
| Things I want to do | Features used | Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Create an explanatory video by recording the screen | Video production — Recording | 2 |
| Edit the recorded video (Cut · Zoom · Transition) | Video production — Editing | 3 |
| Convert a video explained with words into a document | Automatic subtitles → Create subtitle script | 4 |
| Create a program usage manual | Document creation — Click history / Section capture | 5 |
| Refine an already written manuscript into a manual | Document creation — Reading manuscript | 5 |
| Automatically save eBooks/Viewer page by page | Automatically capture while turning pages | 2-8 |
| Distribute created documents | Export — HTML · PDF · PPTX · DOCX · MP4 | 7 |
1-2. Operating Environment
| What is needed | Why it is needed | What happens if there is none |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 (1903) or later / Windows 11, 64-bit | The screen capture method (WGC) is supported from this version | Installation fails or capture fails |
| .NET 10 Desktop Runtime — Download | It is the runtime base of the program | The program does not start at all (No response) |
| Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime — Download | Document preview and PDF export are rendered on this | The program starts but The preview is a blank screenIt works |
WebView2 is included by default in Windows 11so there is no need to install it separately. Most Windows 10 systems have it installed if updated, and if not, you can download it from the above link. The installer will check and guide you only when it is not present. | GPU (NVIDIA·AMD·Intel, optional) | Accelerates automatic subtitle recognition and video encoding | Works without one — just takes longer as processing is done by CPU |
The installer checks for the above two runtimes and provides download links if they are missing. However, it will not install them, so if prompted, download and install them first. For more details, Installation Guidesee here.
GPU acceleration has no separate settings to turn it on or off. Automatic subtitles use the GPU if available. Only recording/saving GPU acceleration can be adjusted inSettings.
1-3. Screen layout
The program window consists of the top common toolbar + center tabs + bottom status bar three parts.
Top common toolbar
contains tools that are shared and used across all tabs.

4-6. Create subtitle script 🔒
Subtitle ▾ → Create Subtitle Manuscript…
Group subtitles into paragraphs and sections, selecting a representative screen for each section to create a Markdown script. Once created the document creation tab opens automatically and sections are included.
- Section boundaries are Marker · Inserted page > Silent section > Set time in order. To divide at the desired place, use Frame Edit ▾ → Add Markerto mark it in advance.
- If the section you marked is long, divide it again within that section. Cutting points are ① where the screen changes and the sentence ends(where the story changes), ② pauses between paragraphs, ③ if it gets too long, at the end of a sentence. Since one section becomes one manual page, also consider the minimum length (about 200 characters · 20 seconds) so it is not cut too short.
- Exclude subtitles for the cut (removed) sections. It is possible.
- Time indication in the script
[mm:ss]When the option is on, the time is attached before each paragraph.
To start, two things must be prepared — Subtitles(auto-generated or imported) and the original video(needed for extracting the representative frame).

| Options (HTML only) | Include in file (complete in one file) / place in a separate folder and link |
JPEG significantly reduces file size. Screen captures have a lot of flat colors, so PNG originals are already well-compressed; simply reducing size does not significantly reduce file size.
Recommended width differs by format. If reduced smaller, a warning will be shown in the window.
| Format | Recommended minimum width | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PPTX | 1920 px | Displayed fully on the slide |

| Minimum length | Minimum time for one slide. If the narration is long, it automatically extends to match the length. |
| Scene transition | Fade between slides |
| Subtitle file | Same name as the video .srt Save together (for YouTube upload). Default is off |
If the screen description is long, export check will stop. **Tools → Description Step·Narration·Video Connection…** Write a screen summary within 300 characters and put the full description in the video dialogue. Even if a recording file is connected, the voice will not be automatically transcribed, so you need to match lines for subtitles.
If narration synthesis fails, retry the section once. If it continues to fail, notify the failed section number and stop video export. Check voice/API key settings and export again. Silent video can be made by turning off narration options.

C. Frequently encountered situations
No sound is recorded during recording
Video Production → Audio → Output DeviceButtons Off Check if it is not set up. If the level meter is moving but the recording is empty, the sound may be going to a different output device. Match the output device of the app you are playing with the device selected here. Recording log(aftercap_video.log) Output loopback=ON Device name and peak remain.

The 'This Page' table of contents on the right is empty. It is because there is no subheading in the current section text. In the template configuration set the page division to H2. Change it, or turn off the table of contents on the right and use the main text widely.
The HTML file is too large in the export window JPEG quality 80 and Maximum width 1280 px Choosing this will reduce it significantly. To reduce it further place the image in a separate folder and select Link.
ASCII diagrams will be distorted Hangul has twice the width of English letters, so lines can easily misalign. When you save the document, it will adjust automatically. Emojis inside diagrams have inconsistent width, so it's better to exclude them.

E. Terminology
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Section | A unit of document creation. When exported, it becomes one page (or one slide) |
| Page | One sheet in the exported result. In videos, it is a still image inserted as 'Frame Editing' |
| section | In the video [ ] Time range captured with + You can stack multiple items (A·B·C…) |
| Marker | Marks a point in the video. Also used as section boundaries for subtitle scripts |
| Non-destructive editing | A method where you only mark without touching the original, and it is applied when saving |
| Filmstrip | The line of thumbnails under the preview |
| Manuscript (.md) | Markdown text. Decompose it into sections and assemble it into a document |
| Document (.scribe) | A work package containing images, editing objects, and recorded audio. The linked original video is stored separately |
| PiP | Picture in Picture — a small webcam screen overlaid on the display |
| STT | Speech to Text — transcribes spoken words into text (automatic subtitles) |
11. Creating Documents and Videos by the Same Explanation Steps
Based on AfterCap 1.08. A separate HTML manual is provided and can be opened in a browser at docs/help/index.html. The original installation file does not include the manual
Record the target program’s usage procedure step by step, then generate manuals and training videos at the same steps. You can separately edit the document text, summary to display on the screen, and lines to read aloud
1. Manual structure and operation record
For document creation Tools → Add basic manual table of contentsCreates a template to write purpose, target version, preparations, usage procedure, expected results, and troubleshooting [Needs Writing]Replace it with the actual description. If any item is left blank, the export check will notify you
Select the target window and existing Start recordingis used. In addition to clicks, record shortcuts, text input, drag, and scroll as descriptive steps. Normal input is grouped as 'entering or editing text' instead of showing the actual characters. Since screen captures may show input content, check the image before distribution.
Select a step Tools → Add current step result screenPress this to attach the current result screen of the target window to the end of the text. It does not automatically judge the accuracy of the expected result.
2. Linking documents and videos
Select a step and open **Tools → Link descriptive step, narration, video…**
| Items | Usage |
|---|---|
| Step title | Title of the video marker linked to the document step |
| Expected result | Result description to add to the end of the final document text |
| Dialogue for video | Content for TTS to read. If left empty, the document content is used |
| Summary for video screen | Short description to display in the video. Long text should be summarized within 300 characters |
| Original video · start · end | Actual operation video segment to play at that step |
| Minimum screen display time | Ensure reading time. If the dialogue is long, maintain the last frame |
| Voice file | Narration recorded directly. If the voice option is enabled, this is used instead of TTS |
To use actual operation video, open the recording file in the video production tab and select the segment, then Link selected segment in the video production tabPress this. Currently, linking recordings and document steps is done this way. It does not include a feature to automatically link click records with recorded time.
If the original video is left empty, slides are created using captured images. You can mix the steps that connect video segments and the slide steps in a single output. The original sound of the connected video is not mixed into the composite video; instead, the specified narration or silence is used.
3. Editing step-by-step narration
Use the sequence: Record voice for this step → End recording → Preview the connected audio → Apply. You can re-record only specific steps or connect WAV, MP3, or M4A files.
TTS reuses successful results for sections where the script and voice settings are the same. Steps with changed scripts are newly generated. If synthesis fails, it retries once, and if it continues to fail, it stops the output while displaying the step number. Failures are not treated as successful silence. Video encoding is redone for the entire final file.
4. Saving and recovering work
- Documents are
.scribesaved with the step ID, script, video segments, directly recorded voice, and output change status. Images are included in the usual way. - The connected original video is
.scribenot included in. When moving to another PC, bring the original videos as well and reassign the paths in the step editing. - Video editing is saved from the project save menu of video production as
.acvideo. Cuts, zoom/move, effects, subtitles, pages, markers, transitions, cropping, etc., and used images are retained. .acvideoThe original video is also referenced as an external file. If the original is not available when opening, select an alternative file. You need to select the original with the same content and length to match the editing position.- The video project creates a recovery copy every 2 minutes when there are changes, and the previous file is left
.bakupon saving. You can open the copy from the recovery menu.
5. Hiding distribution images
In the image editing window, ObscurePress it and place black rectangles over sensitive areas. In the final document or slide export, the black areas are composited into the image pixels. Even if the same original image is reused at another stage, the hiding will be applied.
For editing .scriberetains editable originals. Use the final export file for external distribution. It does not automatically erase sensitive sentences written directly in the main text.
Image hiding is not automatically tracked and applied to linked videos. Stages with hiding need to detach linked videos and export them to slides. For hiding in the actual video, specify the time and position in the video editor and check the entire relevant section.
6. Inspection and batch export
Tools → Pre-export production checkwill verify missing images, audio, or video, incorrect sections, uncreated table of contents, and long screen summaries. It shows the number of stages to be re-exported and whether the composition has changed for both documents and videos. This state is a comparison with the last successful export, and it does not monitor the presence or quality of export files in real-time.
**Tools → Batch export documents and videos…** to select video options and storage folder. Permission to use the existing Office export is required.
